What you get with one-click Beszel
Beszel is an open-source (MIT) server monitoring tool. A central hub stores the history and shows the dashboard; a small agent on each server reports its stats. Choose it with a plan, pay, and we build the VPS (KVM, NVMe, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS) and install it in about two minutes after boot. You get:
- The Beszel 0.21.1 hub, the web dashboard, built on PocketBase.
- This server already added. A local agent monitors the VPS from the start, including its Docker containers, and talks to the hub over a private socket, so no agent port is opened.
- Your account ready: you log in with your Devoster account email and a generated password shown in the Devoster dashboard. Self-registration is off, and the one-time "create first user" form is used up by the install before the address goes public.
- An HTTPS address like
beszel-k3x9a2.devoster.appwith a Let's Encrypt certificate. The same credentials also open the PocketBase admin screen at/_/, for settings and the database underneath. - Dashboard controls to open Beszel, reset your password, restart, stop or start it, read its logs, run an update and connect your own domain.
The app is free; you pay only the VPS plan, with 10% off yearly. The server comes with full root, free nightly backups kept 3 days plus one snapshot, a dedicated IPv4 and DDoS protection. Already have a Devoster VPS? You can install Beszel on it from VPS Control, after the panel checks the OS, free ports 80/443 and disk, or reinstall the server with it, at no charge. Other apps that install this way are on the One-Click Apps page.
Adding your other servers
In the Beszel dashboard, choose Add system. Beszel shows a ready-made install command for the agent, as a Docker container or a single binary, with your hub's address and a token filled in. Run it on the server you want to watch, and it appears in the dashboard within moments.
- Nothing to open on the hub. Agents connect out to your hub's HTTPS address over a WebSocket on port 443, so the monitored servers don't need an inbound port and the Beszel VPS needs nothing beyond 80 and 443.
- Any Linux server works, at Devoster or elsewhere, as long as it can reach your hub over HTTPS.
- The older SSH mode, where the hub dials the agent on port 45876, also exists. It needs that port open on the monitored server, not on this one.
For each server you see CPU, memory, disk usage and disk I/O, network traffic and per-container Docker stats, with history you can scroll back through.
Alerts and notifications
Beszel can alert you when a server goes down or when CPU, memory, disk, bandwidth or temperature crosses a threshold you set. You switch alerts on per server in the systems table, and choose where they go in the notification settings.
- Push services work out of the box. Beszel sends notifications through webhook-style URLs for services such as Discord, Slack, Telegram, Gotify, Microsoft Teams or a generic webhook. A natural pairing is your own ntfy server for alerts on your phone.
- Email alerts need SMTP. Outbound mail ports are blocked by default on Devoster VPS plans and the install configures no mail server. To use email, enter your email provider's SMTP details in the PocketBase settings at
/_/and ask us to open its submission port; it is opened on request after approval.
Temperature readings come from hardware sensors, which a virtual server usually doesn't expose; they are useful on physical machines you monitor.
Beszel, Uptime Kuma or Grafana?
We offer all three, and they answer different questions:
| App | Answers | Good fit |
|---|---|---|
| Beszel | How are my servers doing inside: CPU, memory, disk, containers? | A handful to dozens of servers, set up in minutes |
| Uptime Kuma | Is my site or service reachable from outside, right now? | Uptime checks, status pages |
| Grafana | Anything you can graph, with queries and custom dashboards | Detailed metrics, logs and databases, more setup |
One point applies to any monitor: if it runs on the same machine as what it watches, it goes down with it and can't warn you. Beszel monitors its own VPS, but it is most useful watching your other servers from a separate, small machine, which is what this app gives you.
How much VPS does Beszel need?
Very little. The hub is a single small program with an SQLite database, and agents send compact stats. Nano (1 vCPU, 1 GB, 25 GB) runs it comfortably for a homelab or a small fleet, so it is both the minimum and the recommended plan.
What grows over time is the stored history, which depends on how many servers and containers you monitor. Choose Micro (1 vCPU, 2 GB, 50 GB) if you plan to watch dozens of servers with many containers each, or want room to run something else on the same VPS.
Updates, backups and what stays your responsibility
Updates: we check new Beszel versions and apply them to the hub and the local agent in a maintenance hour you choose, or when you press Update now. A snapshot of the VPS is taken first, and if Beszel doesn't come back healthy the server is rolled back automatically. Agents on your other servers are yours to update; keep them on a version that matches the hub.
Locked out? Reset password in the Devoster dashboard sets a new password for both your Beszel account and the PocketBase admin, and signs out existing sessions.
Backups: nightly backups (3 days) and your snapshot slot cover the whole VPS, including the stored history.
The server is unmanaged: you have full root, and its security is your responsibility. A monitoring hub knows a lot about your servers, so it is worth hardening; our VPS hardening checklist covers SSH keys and the firewall.
