What you get with one-click Plane
Plane is an open-source project management tool, often chosen as an alternative to Jira or Linear. Its Community Edition is the self-hosted version under the AGPL-3.0. Choose it with a plan, pay, and we build the VPS (KVM, NVMe, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS) and install it; the first start takes about six minutes while Plane prepares its database. You get:
- Plane Community Edition v1.4.3 with everything it runs on: PostgreSQL, Valkey, RabbitMQ, S3-compatible storage for uploads on the same server, and the live server for collaborative editing.
- Your account and workspace ready. You log in with your Devoster account email and a generated password shown in the Devoster dashboard. Your account is the instance admin and owns a workspace called "My Workspace", with onboarding already done.
- Sign-up closed from the first start. Only an email address you have invited to the workspace can create an account, and the instance admin setup is already taken.
- Telemetry off: Plane's instance metrics and usage reporting are switched off.
- An HTTPS address like
projects-k3x9a2.devoster.app, and dashboard controls to open the app, reset your password, restart, stop or start it, read its logs, run an update and connect your own domain.
The app is free; you pay only the VPS plan, with 10% off yearly, and no per-seat fee however many people you invite. The server comes with full root, free nightly backups kept 3 days plus one snapshot, a dedicated IPv4 and DDoS protection. Already have a Devoster VPS? You can install Plane on it from VPS Control, after the panel checks the OS, free ports 80/443 and disk, or reinstall the server with it, at no charge. Other apps that install this way are on the One-Click Apps page.
What Plane Community Edition gives your team
Inside a workspace you create projects, and each project holds its work:
- Work items (issues) with states, priorities, labels, assignees, estimates and sub-items.
- Cycles for time-boxed sprints, and modules for grouping work into features or milestones.
- Layouts: list, Kanban board, calendar, spreadsheet and a timeline (Gantt-style) view, plus saved views with your filters.
- Pages for specs and notes, edited together in real time.
- Intake for requests that someone reviews before they become work.
Plane also sells paid editions, and some features on its website belong to those plans and aren't part of the Community Edition. If a particular feature matters to you, check Plane's edition comparison before you move your team.
Inviting your team without email
Outbound mail ports are blocked by default on Devoster VPS plans and the install has no mail server, so Plane sends no invitation emails, and its email magic-link login is off. Adding a colleague takes two steps:
- Invite their email address in your workspace settings, under members, with the role you want them to have.
- Tell them yourself to open your Plane address and sign up with exactly that email address and a password of their choice. The pending invitation is what allows the account; any other address is refused.
Your workspace's address is fixed: it lives at /my-workspace. You can rename the workspace itself, and create more workspaces as instance admin. Instance-wide settings are in Plane's admin area at /god-mode, where you can also add an SMTP provider for email; its submission port is opened on request after approval.
How much VPS does Plane need?
Plane is one of the heavier apps we offer: a Django API, background workers, three web front ends, a collaboration server, PostgreSQL, Valkey, RabbitMQ and file storage all run together. That is why the smallest plan it is offered on is Starter. The install sizes the API and background workers to the plan.
| Your use | Plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Trying Plane, a small team | Starter (2 vCPU / 4 GB) | One API worker and one background worker. It runs, with little headroom. |
| A team using it every day | Basic (3 vCPU / 6 GB) | Two of each, a bigger database cache and more room for the collaboration server. |
| Several teams, many projects | Advanced (4 vCPU / 8 GB) | Three of each, for more people working at the same time. |
Uploads are capped at 50 MB per file and stored on the VPS disk, so attachments count against your plan's storage. You can upgrade from the panel later; the worker count follows the new plan with the next update.
Your own domain, updates and backups
Your own domain: Plane works from one address at a time. When you connect your domain from the dashboard (a CNAME or A record) and it is verified, Plane moves to it and the devoster.app address redirects there. Links already shared keep working through the redirect.
Updates: we check new Plane releases and apply them in a maintenance hour you choose, or when you press Update now. A snapshot of the VPS is taken first, and if Plane doesn't come back healthy the server is rolled back automatically.
Locked out? Reset password in the Devoster dashboard sets a new password for your admin account and signs out its existing sessions.
Backups: nightly backups (3 days) and your snapshot slot cover the whole VPS, including the database and uploaded files.
Licence, trademarks and what stays your responsibility
Plane Community Edition is licensed under the AGPL-3.0. Plane is a trademark of its developers; Devoster isn't affiliated with Plane or endorsed by it, and this is not Plane's own cloud service. Addresses start with projects- rather than the product name.
The server is unmanaged: you have full root, and its security, your users and your project data are your responsibility. We install and update Plane, but we don't support how you set up projects or workflows; Plane's documentation covers that. Our VPS hardening checklist covers SSH keys and the firewall.
Want something lighter? If your team mostly needs a wiki, BookStack is far smaller, and if your code and issues should live together, Forgejo has issue tracking built into its repositories.
