What you get with the one-click Minecraft server
Choose the Minecraft server with a plan, accept Mojang's EULA at checkout (a checkbox linking to minecraft.net/eula), pay, and we build the VPS (KVM, NVMe, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS). About five minutes after boot the game server is running; the first world takes another minute or so to generate. You get:
- A Paper server (version 26.3) for Minecraft: Java Edition, with Java's memory sized to your plan, Aikar's recommended start flags, autostart after a reboot and a restart after a crash.
- Crafty Controller 4.11, an open-source (GPL-3.0) web panel for the console, files, backups, schedules and plugins, at an HTTPS address like
play-k3x9q2.devoster.app. You log in asadminwith a generated password shown in the Devoster dashboard. - The game port 25565 open to players. It is the only public port besides SSH and HTTPS; the panel sits behind HTTPS.
- Dashboard controls to open Crafty, reset its admin password, restart, stop or start it, read its logs, run an update and connect your own domain.
The software is free; you pay only the VPS plan, with 10% off yearly. The server comes with full root, free nightly backups kept 3 days plus one snapshot, a dedicated IPv4, 1 Gbps with unlimited bandwidth and DDoS protection. Already have a Devoster VPS? You can reinstall it with the Minecraft server from VPS Control at no charge. It isn't installed on top of a server already in use, because the game reserves the whole server's memory. Other apps are on the One-Click Apps page.
Not an official Minecraft product. Not approved by or associated with Mojang or Microsoft.
How players join your server
- The address: players choose Multiplayer, Add Server, and enter your
play-address. 25565 is Minecraft's default port, so they don't need to type it. - A genuine Java Edition account: the server runs in online mode, which checks every player's account with Mojang. That keeps impostors out of your world and makes the whitelist and bans work by account.
- Bedrock can't join yet. Players on consoles, phones and the Windows Bedrock edition can't connect to this server.
- Your own domain: once you connect it in the dashboard, players can use it too, for example
mc.example.com. - Who may play: turn on the whitelist and add your players from Crafty's console, or keep the server open and moderate with bans.
Want more than one game on the server? A Minecraft: Java Edition server is also one of the games of our Game Server, which runs the Pterodactyl web panel and can host several games on one VPS, for example Java next to a Minecraft Bedrock server for phone and Windows players. For a single Minecraft server, Crafty on this page is the simpler choice.
How many players per plan? RAM and the Java heap
A Minecraft server holds its world in Java's memory (the heap), and it stutters or crashes if that memory is taken away. So on this app all of the plan's RAM is reserved for the server and never reclaimed by the host. The heap is set from the RAM: the RAM minus about 1 GB below 4 GB, and 85% of the rest from 4 GB up, leaving room for Crafty and the system. Smaller plans also start with a shorter view distance.
| Plan | Java heap (approx.) | Players (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Micro (1 vCPU / 2 GB / 50 GB) | 0.75 to 1 GB | About 2 to 5 friends |
| Starter (2 vCPU / 4 GB / 75 GB) | About 2.75 GB | About 10. Recommended. |
| Basic (3 vCPU / 6 GB / 100 GB) | About 4 GB | About 20 to 30 |
| Advanced (4 vCPU / 8 GB / 125 GB) | About 5.5 GB | About 20 to 30, with more headroom for plugins and exploring |
These are estimates, not guarantees: farms, redstone, many loaded chunks and heavy plugins all cost more, and Minecraft's main game loop runs mostly on one core. Modpacks need much more RAM than plain Paper, so start at Basic or above for one. The exact heap is the -Xmx value in the server's start command in Crafty. It is set once, at install: after upgrading your plan from the panel, raise it there yourself. Plans are not shrunk in place.
Running the server from Crafty
Crafty is where you run the game day to day, from any browser:
- Console: send commands (
op,whitelist add, say) and watch the log live. - Files: edit
server.properties, upload plugins intoplugins/, and change settings such as difficulty, game mode and view distance. - Backups: zip the server on demand or on a schedule, and restore one.
- Schedules: restart nightly, announce restarts, or back up before an update.
- Users and roles: give a friend access to the console or just to start and stop the server. Give every Crafty user a strong password.
- Versions and other servers: Crafty can create further servers, including other versions and server types, and import an existing world: upload its zip over SFTP to
/opt/devoster/data/minecraft/importand use Crafty's import option.
Paper runs Bukkit, Spigot and Paper plugins. It doesn't run Forge or Fabric mods; for those, create a server of that type in Crafty and size the plan for it.
Mojang's EULA: what you accept at checkout
Every Minecraft server must accept Mojang's End User License Agreement before it starts. You accept it yourself at checkout, with a checkbox that links to minecraft.net/eula, and only then is the game server created for you. Please read it: among other things it sets out what you may and may not charge players for on a server you run.
The server and its world are yours to run; Devoster provides the VPS and the install, not the game, and has no connection to Mojang or Microsoft.
Backups, updates and what stays your responsibility
Backups: nightly VPS backups (kept 3 days) and your snapshot slot cover the whole server, and Crafty's own backups let you roll one world back without touching the rest. Crafty keeps them on the same VPS in /opt/devoster/data/minecraft/backups, so copy the ones that matter off the server over SFTP now and then.
Updates: we check new Crafty versions and apply them in a maintenance hour you choose, or when you press Update now, with a snapshot of the VPS first and an automatic rollback if Crafty doesn't come back healthy. Crafty stops the game, saving the world, before it restarts. The Minecraft version itself is yours to change in Crafty, when your players and plugins are ready.
Password resets from the Devoster dashboard set a new password on Crafty's first admin, sign it out and remove its two-factor login, in case you lose your phone.
The server is unmanaged: you have full root, and what you install and who you let in are your responsibility. Our VPS hardening checklist is a good hour's read.
