What you get with a Devoster game server

Pick a game and a plan at checkout, pay, and we build the VPS (KVM, NVMe, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS). The panel is ready about six minutes after boot; the game then downloads its own server files, which takes a few more minutes for the Steam games. You get:

    • Pterodactyl Panel 1.15 with Wings 1.13, the open-source (MIT) game panel, at an HTTPS address like game-k3x9q2.devoster.app. You are the panel's admin and log in with your email and a generated password shown in the Devoster dashboard.
    • Your first game server, already created for the game you chose, with its own console, file manager, SFTP access on port 2022, two backup slots and a daily restart schedule.
    • The game's ports open on your dedicated IPv4 address. Each game family has a range of 10 ports, so there is room for more servers later.
    • Dashboard controls to open the panel, reset your admin password, restart, stop or start everything, and read the logs.

The software is free; you pay only the VPS plan, with 10% off yearly. The server comes with full root, free nightly backups kept 3 days plus one snapshot, 1 Gbps with unlimited bandwidth and network-level DDoS protection from the datacenter. Already have a Devoster VPS? You can reinstall it with the Game Server from VPS Control at no charge; it isn't installed on top of a server already in use, because the games reserve the server's memory. Other apps are on the One-Click Apps page.

Which games can I host, and on which plan?

These are the eight games you can pick at checkout. Player counts are estimates for the recommended plan, not guarantees: mods, big maps and busy late-game worlds all need more.

    GameSmallest planRecommendedPlayers (estimate)
Minecraft: Java Edition (Paper)StarterAdvancedAbout 10 to 20 on Advanced; modpacks need more RAM
Minecraft: Bedrock EditionMicroStarterAbout 10 on Starter
ValheimStarterBasicUp to 10, the game's own limit
TerrariaMicroStarter8 by default; you can raise it
Terraria with tModLoaderStarterAdvancedAbout 8 on Advanced with a typical mod list
Project ZomboidAdvancedProAbout 10 to 16 on Pro
FactorioStarterBasicAbout 10 on Basic; huge bases need more
Don't Starve TogetherStarterBasicAbout 6 to 10 on Basic with the caves on

Every plan's RAM is fixed for the games: the host never reclaims it. About 768 MB stays with the panel and Ubuntu; the rest goes to the game servers, roughly 1 GB on Micro, 3 GB on Starter, 5 GB on Basic, 7 GB on Advanced and 11 GB on Pro. The vCPUs are Intel Xeon Gold 6138 cores, and most game servers run their main loop on a single core, which is why the estimates above are conservative. Minecraft Java is also sold as its own one-app server with the Crafty panel on the Minecraft server page.

Running several game servers on one VPS

One VPS can run more than one game, as long as the RAM covers them. Your first server starts with all of the games' memory, so to add another, lower its memory first. As the panel's admin you do it all in the admin area: lower the first server's memory in its Build Configuration, then create a new server with an egg from the Devoster Games nest and a free port from that game's range. The panel won't let the servers add up to more memory than the VPS has for games.

    Game familyPorts on your IPv4
    Minecraft: Java Edition25565 to 25574
    Minecraft: Bedrock Edition19132 to 19141
    Valheim (3 ports per server)2456 to 2465
    Terraria and tModLoader7777 to 7786
Project Zomboid (2 ports per server)16261 to 16270
Don't Starve Together (surface and caves)10999 to 11008
    Factorio34197 to 34206

For example, a Starter plan's roughly 3 GB could hold a Terraria world and a small Bedrock server side by side. Two Steam survival games at once usually need Basic or more. To switch games, create a server for the new game and delete the old one when you're done.

Game updates, daily restarts and backups

    • Steam games update themselves. Valheim, Project Zomboid and Don't Starve Together install the latest server build every time they start. We also watch Steam: when a new build ships, the servers running that game get a five-minute warning in the game chat (Valheim has no chat command, so it restarts straight away) and are restarted to update, so players on the new version can still join.
    • A daily restart early each morning comes with your first server, with the same in-game warning. Move it or switch it off in the server's Schedules tab, and add one to any server you create yourself.
    • The other games (Minecraft, Terraria, tModLoader, Factorio) install the version named in the Startup tab, the latest by default. To move to a newer version, back the server up and use Reinstall Server in its Settings tab.
    • Backups: each game server has two backup slots in the panel, kept on the VPS, so download the ones that matter now and then. Nightly VPS backups (kept 3 days) and your snapshot cover the whole server.
    • Panel updates: we check new versions of the panel and apply them in a maintenance hour you choose, with a snapshot of the VPS first and an automatic rollback if the panel doesn't come back healthy.

Where the server is: ping across the US and Canada

Every game server runs in our datacenter in Utah, USA. It is our only location, and a central one for North America. Typical round-trip times from Salt Lake City, as published by WonderNetwork, are about 23 ms to Los Angeles, 35 ms to Chicago, 42 ms to Toronto, 47 ms to New York and 67 ms to Miami: under about 70 ms across the continental US and Canada. Your players' own connections add to that, so treat these as typical, not guaranteed.

Co-op and survival games like the ones above play well at those times. Players in Europe, Asia or South America will see well over 100 ms, so this isn't the right server for a group based there.

Accounts, game licences and what stays yours

Friends in the panel: the panel can't send email (outbound mail is blocked on our VPSes), so invites and "forgot password" mails don't arrive. Create each friend's account in the admin area with a password you give them, then add them to a server from its Users tab with only the permissions they need. Your own password can be reset from the Devoster dashboard.

Game licences: every player needs their own copy of the game. Minecraft servers need Mojang's EULA, which you accept at checkout. Don't Starve Together needs a server token from your Klei account before its first start. The game names on these pages describe what the server runs: Devoster is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of the games' publishers.

Your responsibility: the VPS is unmanaged. You have full root, and the games, mods and people you let in are yours to run. Our VPS hardening checklist is a good hour's read.

    Frequently Asked Questions

The panel and the install are free. You pay only the VPS plan: from $4.49/mo on Micro for Terraria or Bedrock, $7.99/mo on Starter, $10.99/mo on Basic for Valheim, Factorio or Don't Starve Together, and $19.99/mo on Pro for Project Zomboid. Yearly billing takes 10% off.

A whole KVM VPS with its own IPv4 address and full root. You aren't charged per player slot; the limits are the plan's RAM and CPU, and the game's own player cap.

Yes, if the RAM covers both. Lower the first server's memory in the admin area, then create a second server with another game's egg and a port from its range. Each game family has 10 ports.

About six minutes after the VPS boots for the panel, then the game's own download: a minute or two for Terraria or Bedrock, longer for the Steam games such as Project Zomboid.

For Valheim, Project Zomboid and Don't Starve Together, yes: a new Steam build restarts their servers to update, after a five-minute in-game warning where the game supports one. Minecraft, Terraria, tModLoader and Factorio update when you reinstall the server from its Settings tab.

Probably not for fast games. The server is in Utah, USA, our only location; typical round trips to London and Frankfurt are about 130 to 150 ms. It is built for players in the US and Canada.

The VPS has network-level DDoS protection from the datacenter. There is no game-specific filtering, so a public server that attracts attacks may still be disrupted.

Yes. Create their accounts in the panel's admin area with a password you choose, because the panel can't send invite emails, then give them access to a server from its Users tab.
