What you get with the Factorio server
Pick Factorio as the game of our Game Server, choose a plan and pay. We build the VPS (KVM, NVMe, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS); about six minutes after boot the panel is ready, and the server downloads the latest stable headless Factorio from factorio.com, generates a new map and starts. You get:
- A headless Factorio server named "My Factorio Server", with a save called
gamesave, 20 player slots, an autosave every 10 minutes (5 kept) and a restart after a crash. - Pterodactyl, an open-source (MIT) web panel, at an HTTPS address like
game-k3x9q2.devoster.app, with a console, file manager, SFTP on port 2022, two backup slots and schedules. You are its admin and log in with your email and a generated password shown in the Devoster dashboard. - Port 34197 (UDP) open on your dedicated IPv4 address.
The software is free; you pay only the VPS plan, with 10% off yearly. The server comes with full root, free nightly backups kept 3 days plus one snapshot, 1 Gbps with unlimited bandwidth and network-level DDoS protection from the datacenter. Already have a Devoster VPS? You can reinstall it with the Game Server from VPS Control at no charge. Other apps are on the One-Click Apps page.

How players join, and keeping the server private
- Joining: in Factorio, Multiplayer, then Connect to address, and enter your server's IP address (or its
devoster.appaddress). 34197 is Factorio's default port, so players don't need to type it. - A game password: set
game_passwordindata/server-settings.jsonwith the file manager and restart. - The public server list: to appear there, enter your factorio.com username and token as
SERVER_USERNAMEandSERVER_TOKENin the Startup tab. Without them, players join by address. - Admins: type
/promote <player>in the console to make a player an admin in the game. - Slots: 20 by default. As the panel's admin you can change
MAX_SLOTSin the admin area's Startup settings for the server.
Which plan for a Factorio server?
Factorio runs its whole simulation on one core, 60 times a second, and its memory grows with the map. So the factory's size matters more than the number of players. The plan's RAM is fixed for the game; about 768 MB stays with the panel and Ubuntu, and the rest is the server's memory limit.
| Plan | Memory for the game (approx.) | Good for (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Starter (2 vCPU / 4 GB / 75 GB) | About 3 GB | A few players, early and mid game |
| Basic (3 vCPU / 6 GB / 100 GB) | About 5 GB | About 10 players with a normal base. Recommended. |
| Advanced (4 vCPU / 8 GB / 125 GB) | About 7 GB | Larger late-game bases and mods |
These are estimates, not guarantees. A very large late-game base slows the game down on any plan, because one core does the work: our vCPUs are Intel Xeon Gold 6138 cores, fine for community servers, not tuned for megabases. Adding vCPUs beyond 2 or 3 helps little. After upgrading your plan, raise the server's memory in the panel's admin area.
Saves, mods, updates and backups
- Bring your save: upload your save's
.zipintosaves/over SFTP, setSAVE_NAMEin the Startup tab to its name (without.zip) and restart. - Mods: upload the mod zip files into the
modsfolder; every player needs the same mods. - Updates: the server installs the version in
FACTORIO_VERSION, the latest stable by default. Players' games update on their own, so when a new version comes out, back the server up and use Reinstall Server in its Settings tab. Your saves and settings stay. - Daily restart: early each morning, after a five-minute warning in the game chat. Change or switch it off in the Schedules tab.
- Backups: two backup slots in the panel, kept on the VPS, so download the ones that matter now and then. Nightly VPS backups (kept 3 days) and your snapshot cover the whole server.
- Friends in the panel: the panel can't send email (outbound mail is blocked on our VPSes), so create a friend's account in the admin area with a password you give them, then add them from the server's Users tab.
Location, licence and what stays yours
The server is in Utah, USA, our only location: typical round trips are under about 70 ms across the continental US and Canada, which suits Factorio's co-op play. Players in Europe or Asia will see well over 100 ms.
Wube's terms of service allow the free headless server to be used for hosting services. Every player still needs their own copy of Factorio. The VPS is unmanaged; you have full root, and the mods you install and the people you let in are your responsibility.
