What you get with the Terraria server

Pick Terraria as the game of our Game Server, choose a plan and pay. We build the VPS (KVM, NVMe, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS); about six minutes after boot the panel is ready, and the server downloads the latest Terraria dedicated server, creates the world and starts. You get:

    • A vanilla Terraria server with a small world called "world" in classic (normal) difficulty, up to 8 players and no password yet, restarted automatically after a crash.
    • Pterodactyl, an open-source (MIT) web panel, at an HTTPS address like game-k3x9q2.devoster.app, with a console, file manager, SFTP on port 2022, two backup slots and schedules. You are its admin and log in with your email and a generated password shown in the Devoster dashboard.
    • Port 7777 (TCP) open on your dedicated IPv4 address.

The software is free; you pay only the VPS plan, with 10% off yearly. The server comes with full root, free nightly backups kept 3 days plus one snapshot, 1 Gbps with unlimited bandwidth and network-level DDoS protection from the datacenter. Already have a Devoster VPS? You can reinstall it with the Game Server from VPS Control at no charge. Other apps are on the One-Click Apps page. Want mods? See the tModLoader server.

How players join, and how to add a password

    • Joining: in Terraria on PC, Multiplayer, then Join via IP. Enter your server's IP address (or its devoster.app address) and port 7777.
    • A password: the server starts without one, so anyone with the address can join. Set PASSWORD in the server's Startup tab and restart; players then type it when they join.
    • More players: raise MAX_PLAYERS in the Startup tab and restart.
    • Moderating: the console takes Terraria's server commands, such as say, kick, ban and save.

Which plan for a Terraria server?

Vanilla Terraria is light: a server needs roughly 0.5 to 1.5 GB depending on the world. The plan's RAM is fixed for the game; about 768 MB stays with the panel and Ubuntu, and the rest is the server's memory limit.

PlanMemory for the game (approx.)Good for (estimate)
Micro (1 vCPU / 2 GB / 50 GB)About 1 GBA small or medium world with the default 8 players
Starter (2 vCPU / 4 GB / 75 GB)About 3 GBA large world, more players, or a second game next to it. Recommended.
    Basic (3 vCPU / 6 GB / 100 GB)About 5 GBSeveral worlds or games on one VPS

These are estimates, not guarantees. For modded Terraria, which needs much more memory, choose the tModLoader server instead. After upgrading your plan, raise the server's memory in the panel's admin area.

    Worlds, settings and updates

    • World settings: the Startup tab sets the world name, size (small, medium or large), difficulty (classic, expert, master or journey), seed and message of the day. Size, difficulty and seed apply when a new world is created, so to start over, change WORLD_NAME too.
    • Bring your world: upload your .wld file over SFTP into saves/Worlds, set WORLD_NAME to its name (without .wld) and restart.
    • Updates: the server installs the version in the TERRARIA_VERSION field, the latest by default. When a new Terraria version comes out, back the server up and use Reinstall Server in its Settings tab; your worlds in saves/Worlds stay.
    • Daily restart: early each morning, after a five-minute warning in the game chat. Change or switch it off in the Schedules tab.
    • Backups: two backup slots in the panel, kept on the VPS, so download the ones that matter now and then. Nightly VPS backups (kept 3 days) and your snapshot cover the whole server.

Friends in the panel, and what stays yours

The panel can't send email, because outbound mail is blocked on our VPSes. To let a friend restart the server or edit files, create their account in the panel's admin area with a password you give them, then add them from the server's Users tab with only the permissions they need.

The server is in Utah, USA, our only location: typical round trips are under about 70 ms across the continental US and Canada. The VPS is unmanaged; you have full root, and what you install and who you let in are your responsibility.

    Frequently Asked Questions

The panel and the install are free. You pay only the VPS plan: from $4.49/mo on Micro, or $7.99/mo on the recommended Starter plan, with 10% off yearly.

8 by default. Raise MAX_PLAYERS in the server's Startup tab and restart; bigger groups and worlds need more RAM, so Starter is the safer plan for them.

7777, Terraria's default, over TCP. In the game: Multiplayer, Join via IP, then your address and 7777.

Not at first. Set PASSWORD in the Startup tab and restart to keep strangers out.

Yes. Upload the .wld file into saves/Worlds over SFTP, set WORLD_NAME to its name without .wld, and restart.

Not on vanilla Terraria. Choose the tModLoader server for mods; it needs more RAM, from Starter up.

Back the server up, then use Reinstall Server in its Settings tab. With TERRARIA_VERSION on latest, it downloads the newest server and keeps your worlds.

No. It is your own VPS running Terraria's dedicated server. Terraria is a trademark of Re-Logic; Devoster is not affiliated with or endorsed by Re-Logic.
