What you get with the tModLoader server
Pick Terraria with tModLoader as the game of our Game Server, choose a plan and pay. We build the VPS (KVM, NVMe, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS); about six minutes after boot the panel is ready, and the server downloads the latest tModLoader release, creates a world and starts. You get:
- A tModLoader dedicated server with a small world called "world" in normal difficulty, up to 8 players, no password yet and no mods until you add them. It restarts automatically after a crash.
- Pterodactyl, an open-source (MIT) web panel, at an HTTPS address like
game-k3x9q2.devoster.app, with a console, file manager, SFTP on port 2022, two backup slots and schedules. You are its admin and log in with your email and a generated password shown in the Devoster dashboard. - Port 7777 (TCP) open on your dedicated IPv4 address.
The software is free; you pay only the VPS plan, with 10% off yearly. The server comes with full root, free nightly backups kept 3 days plus one snapshot, 1 Gbps with unlimited bandwidth and network-level DDoS protection from the datacenter. Already have a Devoster VPS? You can reinstall it with the Game Server from VPS Control at no charge. Other apps are on the One-Click Apps page. For unmodded play, the vanilla Terraria server is lighter.

Adding your mods
The server loads mods from its mods folder. The simplest way to fill it is from your own game:
- Subscribe to the mods in tModLoader on your PC, as usual, and play once with them enabled.
- Copy each mod's
.tmodfile (Steam keeps tModLoader's Workshop downloads in its workshop folder) and theenabled.jsonlist from your tModLoader Mods folder into the server'smodsfolder, over SFTP or with the file manager. - Restart the server and watch the console: it lists every mod it loads and names any it couldn't.
Every player needs the same mods, in versions that match the server's. Big content mods such as Calamity raise the memory a world needs a lot, which is why Advanced is the recommended plan.
How players join, and which plan to pick
Players open tModLoader, then Multiplayer, then Join via IP, and enter your server's IP address (or its devoster.app address) and port 7777, with the same mods enabled. Set SERVER_PASSWORD in the Startup tab to keep strangers out.
| Plan | Memory for the game (approx.) | Good for (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Starter (2 vCPU / 4 GB / 75 GB) | About 3 GB | A few quality-of-life or small content mods |
| Basic (3 vCPU / 6 GB / 100 GB) | About 5 GB | A medium mod list |
| Advanced (4 vCPU / 8 GB / 125 GB) | About 7 GB | About 8 players with a typical big mod list. Recommended. |
| Pro (6 vCPU / 12 GB / 150 GB) | About 11 GB | Very large mod packs or worlds |
These are estimates, not guarantees: the mods decide most of it. The plan's RAM is fixed for the game, with about 768 MB kept for the panel and Ubuntu. The player limit is 8 by default; as the panel's admin you can change MAX_PLAYERS in the admin area's Startup settings for the server.
Updates, restarts and backups
- tModLoader versions: the server installs the release in the
VERSIONfield, the latest by default. When tModLoader releases a new version, update your own game and mods first, then back the server up and use Reinstall Server in its Settings tab. Your worlds and mods folder stay. You can also pinVERSIONto a release tag to stay on one version. - Daily restart: early each morning, after a five-minute warning in the game chat. Change or switch it off in the Schedules tab.
- Backups: two backup slots in the panel, kept on the VPS, so download the ones that matter now and then. Nightly VPS backups (kept 3 days) and your snapshot cover the whole server.
- Friends in the panel: the panel can't send email (outbound mail is blocked on our VPSes), so create a friend's account in the admin area with a password you give them, then add them from the server's Users tab.
Where the server is, and what stays yours
The server is in Utah, USA, our only location. Typical round trips are under about 70 ms across the continental US and Canada; players in Europe or Asia will see well over 100 ms.
The VPS is unmanaged: you have full root, and the mods you install and the people you let in are your responsibility. Every player needs their own copy of Terraria to run tModLoader.
